What is WebShop?
WebShop is a simulated e-commerce environment for training and evaluating language-grounded web agents. Princeton NLP researchers built it and presented it at NeurIPS 2022. It contains 1.18 million real-world products and 12,087 crowd-sourced text instructions; agents navigate webpages to find, customize, and purchase an item matching a given instruction. The open-source GitHub repo, under an MIT license, ships both an HTML visual interface and a text-based OpenAI Gym-compatible environment for RL and agent training.
Our verdict
This is a well-established academic benchmark for shopping-agent research, with a large product catalog and sim-to-real transfer to live Amazon.com reported in the original paper. Its scope is narrow, limited to e-commerce tasks rather than the broader web navigation covered by benchmarks like WebArena or GAIA.
